What is MERV?

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is a number from a test method designed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The number is intended to help people compare filters. Generally speaking, a higher MERV rating indicates better filter performance.

Aprilaire / Space-Gard Original High-Efficiency Filters

These are the original, OEM expandable "accordian" style, factory recommended replacement filters. MERV 10 rated.

This is the high efficiency filtering media, which is the heart of your air cleaner. It will last from one to two years depending on the operation of your heating and/or air conditioning system.

In any application, the life of the media is dependant upon the total volume of air being moved through it as well as the amount of particulate it is filtering.

Dynamic Electronic Air Cleaner 1-Inch Replacement Filter

Combining ease of installation with low static pressure (for lower energy consumption and system wear), 1” Dynamic Air Cleaners are high-efficiency whole-house electronic air cleaners with an equivalency rating of MERV 13. As tiny sub-micron particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pass through the central heating and cooling system, they become polarized. The polarized particles get larger as they join together with other polarized particles and collect on a disposable low-static polarized media pad with an activated charcoal center screen.

Note: DO NOT WASH The electrostatic charge will break up if washed.

Postfilters will elevate the performance of your air cleaner's efficiency in capturing bacteria, smoke, particles, mold spores and other fungi. Honeywell recommends that postfilters be replaced approximately every six (6) months.

Original Honeywell MERV 10 Factory Replacement Filter

Ultra-Web technology is exclusive to high-efficiency Honeywell Media Air Cleaners. Media air filters, at the microscopic level, consist of an interlocking network of fibers that appear quite porous. This porosity is necessary to allow air to pass through the unit with minimal pressure drop. The interlocking fibers of the Ultra-Web material form a web that captures particles that pass right through them. The particles are captured three different ways:

  • Diffusion: The random trajectory of many particles, jostled by molecules, carries them directly into the path of the fiber
  • Impaction: Many particles are too heavy to move out of the path of a fiber, so they slam into a fiber and stick
  • Interception: Random air current cause particles to sweep too close to a fiber, and due to molecular attraction, the fiber grabs the particle

For optimum system performance, replace the filter every six months (before heating season and before cooling season). Adjust the schedule to your needs, but replace the filter at least annually.

Reduces the level of indoor air pollution. For example, encouraging smokers to step outside to indulge their habit, and keeping windows closed during the prime ragweed season, both control pollution at the source.

Ventilation:

Replaces a portion of stale indoor air with fresher outdoor air. Opening the windows when you burn toast, for instance, is a good example of ventilation.

Filtration:

Actually reduces the level of particles in the air. Install a whole-house air cleaner, and whenever the blower motor runs, dirty air will be filtered as it passes through the heating and cooling equipment.
